My husband and I are building a new home.  We’ve spent the last years living in a very small apartment.  We’ve worked very hard, saved every penny, and spent hours designing our dream home.  It will soon become a reality.  There are so many decisions to make.  We don’t want to rush into anything, and then live with a mistake for the rest of our lives.  We have settled on a floor-plan.  We know how many bathrooms there will be, and how big the kitchen will be.  We know where the bedrooms will be located, and how many windows will be installed.  We are now debating over the HVAC system.  In our little apartment, we have gotten by with a ductless mini split.  The unit is a compact little heat pump that doesn’t require traditional air ducts.  It is comprised of an outdoor condensing unit and an indoor air handler.  While we only have two indoor units, there is the possibility of up to eight.  I am very happy with our mini split, but I’m not sure it’s what I want for the new house.  Neither my husband or I want to compromise the design of our home to accommodate ductwork.  We would really like to install a hydronic system.  We could partner a boiler with radiant flooring.  This would eliminate the need for ductwork, and provide efficient, clean, and very consistent heating throughout the house.  This would, however, leave us without air conditioning in the summer.  We are also looking into a geothermal heat pump.  While these systems are expensive to install, they offer incredible energy savings.
